About This Spot

Stepping into Duffy's Tavern in the heart of Boalsburg offers a gentle passage back in time, where sturdy hardwood floors and vintage furnishings create a quietly inviting space. This is a place that embraces the slower rhythms of a well-loved old house, warmed by fireplaces that lend both literal and emotional heat to the room. The soft glow of candlelight flickers alongside traditional fixtures, inviting guests to settle in and savor the calm, slightly unhurried pulse of an evening spent in good company.

The tavern’s atmosphere blends the comfort of a neighborhood bar with the thoughtful touch of an American restaurant that takes pride in thoughtful, seasonal ingredients. Whether you’re drawn by the lure of a perfectly crafted cocktail or the comforting embrace of a rich bisque or soup, Duffy’s offers a moment to pause and enjoy flavors layered with care. From rich, slow-cooked meats to lighter, vibrant salads that brighten the senses, the menu feels thoughtfully assembled—not flashy, but quietly confident in its range.

While the historic setting inspires a sense of nostalgia, the pace of service reflects the genuine efforts of a team trying to tend to every detail, reminding visitors that the hum of a local spot is not always hurried. Fabulously preserved old house that evokes an older age - the hardwoods, the decor, the walls windows and furnishings are all older. Fireplaces heat the room. For those who don’t like that, don’t come - but it’s certainly comfortable and well maintained. Menu is higher end new American. Lots of choices. My duck was perfect. The grilled items were all a touch overdone, the dryness of the chicken on the Gnocchi (which was very rich otherwise) and pork chop did detract from the dish a bit. I didn’t find the wine list an issue like other reviewers - they had some excellent diverse choices, if slightly overpriced. Service was excellent. Friendly helpful and prompt. Only 3-4 miles from downtown state college.

Enthusiastic and nice but a little fast, had to ask for plates for a shared appetizer. The atmosphere could be much better if they would use all the potentials of the nice old building. I would definitely not use those harsh white LED light bulbs in the otherwise sweet old lamps and chandeliers. They just don't fit with the charm. Nice warm candle on the table and neon like white lights around us. Just not cozy as it should be.

A friend mentioned this place to me while we were enjoying dinner elsewhere. Work assisted by sending me to the area for some training, and I made it a point to head here for dinner. I loved the historical nature of the place and enjoyed looking around. The waitress was friendly and accommodating. The food was slow in coming. I originally ordered the halibut, but they were out, so I switched to the sirloin. The steak came out rare when I ordered it medium, so I sent it back. It came back a little closer to my liking, but not quite, and hunger won out. The steak was good. Overall it was a good dining experience and I recommend people to try it the good food and especially the historical nature. Best to call ahead for a reservation
